Activist Left Frustrated After Shocking Illegal Dumping Into River Avonmore

River Avonmore

Investigations are ongoing after up to 30 bags of domestic rubbish, including nappies, were dumped over into one of into a river near Laragh causing widespread revulsion

Investigations are ongoing into a case of illegal dumping in the Avonmore River at Ballard Bridge near Laragh last week.

Up to 30 bags of domestic rubbish, including nappies, were dumped over the side of the bridge last Thursday.

Members of the local community spent several hours removing the rubbish from the water, and had to use a tractor due to the amount of waste and its weight.

Ian Davis of the Pure Mile group which works to combat illegal dumping and fly tipping says dumping in rivers makes finding the culprits very difficult:

''One of the things we need to do is to prosecute people who are involved in illegal dumping. We've had incidents in the past where if this type of dumping was on the landscape Wicklow County Council would go out and investigate for evidence but this location was in a river and very difficult to access. All of the waste was actually in a river so there's not much hope unfortunately of getting any evidence that would indicate who was responsible.''
