Revelations by a food writer and restaurant critic that chicken slices labelled as made in Wicklow, used chicken from South America, has sparked controversy online, with consumers hitting out at Ireland’s labelling laws.
Last month Katy McGuinness tweeted that the Denny’s Chicken slices which is owned by Kerry Foods, didn’t mention where the chicken was from. The company responded that the chicken came from Brazil, while the Food Safety Authority said the product fell under general labeling rules and didn’t have to give the origin of the meat.
However the tweets have drawn a big response from consumers who have described the labelling as inadequate.
