Nothing To Report Says Uisce Éireann Amid Rising Odour Concerns In Greystones

Uisce Éireann says the operators of the plant proactively review treatment processes on site.

Uisce Éireann has confirmed odour abatement systems at the Waste Water Treatment plant in Greystones are operating as normal and as designed.

The statement comes amid concerns raised in recent days by local residents and representatives.

The utility says odour checks and monitors happen on site daily, adding a recent visit from the EPA found no breaches of license conditions, adding:

It is important to note that odour complaints can arise for a variety of reasons, such as lack of rainfall, which impacts the dilution effect in a combined sewer network; temperature, which can naturally give rise to odour issues; and the extent/condition of industrial loading into the sewer network.

The EPA requested an independent assessment of the odour monitoring at the plant which was commissioned earlier this year. The company confirmed:

This report has been issued to the EPA. No significant issues were found. The EPA visited the site again two weeks ago and completed four odour assessments prior to that visit. It did not identify any odours that would constitute a breach of our license conditions.
