Wicklow Gaol Set For New Chapter as Tender Launched for Operator

Wicklow County Council is seeking an experienced and innovative partner to deliver a fresh vision for the historic site, following its recent closure for structural maintenance

Wicklow County Council has begun the search for a new operator to take over the running of the iconic Wicklow Gaol, following its temporary closure for essential structural works and expiry of previous management's contract.

The tender marks what the Council describes as a "significant step," towards securing the long-term future of one of the county’s most recognisable heritage sites.

Council officials are seeking an experienced and imaginative operator who is capable of re-energising the historic attraction.

Cathoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Melanie Corrigan, said the tender represents a major opportunity to secure the Gaol’s long-term future:

 “We are committed to delivering a future for Wicklow Gaol that respects its history while maximising its potential. This is an open invitation to experienced partners to help us create a world-class attraction that benefits our local community and county.”

The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to bring a fresh vision to the site to deliver an immersive visitor experience and expand food, drink and retail choices. But beyond tourism the next operator is expected to strengthen the Gaol’s role as a cultural and community hub. Plans include partnerships with local history groups, education initiatives, and the use of the site for community-led festivals and themed seasonal events.

Chief Executive Emer O’Gorman added that the tender’s publication marks “a pivotal moment” for the site.

 “The focus is now on selecting a new operator who will ensure Wicklow Gaol is fully prepared to capitalise on its opportunities - ready to welcome visitors and serve our community for the next summer tourist season and well into the future.”

The former operator, Wicklow Historic Gaol CLG under the management of Wicklow Enterprise Park, recently completed its tenure. In preparation for the next phase, a Conservation Management Plan has been commissioned to guide repair and restoration works - including fixing leaks and essential maintenance - before reopening.

It’s expected that once improvement works and the procurement process are complete, Wicklow Gaol will reopen ahead of the 2026 summer tourism season, positioning it once again as a flagship destination for heritage tourism and a driver of economic activity in Wicklow Town.
